We speak of pets as members of the family, a notion generally referred to in the warm fuzzy sense. But there can be a dark side to a pet's role as family member:
When a family is infected by violence. The animals in that household are just as likely to have the same problems. An individual who abuses and expresses rage and
humiliation through violence does not choose a large virile subject as a victim. The first victims are often animals. While animals may remain a favored target, the
violence expands to include human Ted Bunday, Albert DeSalvo (the Boston Strangler) and Jeffrey Dahmer are only a few of the notorious serial killers who began their
careers with animals. Most victims of such abuse do not become serial killers, but those who work to protect animal The late anthropologist Margaret Mead once wrote.
"One of the most dangerous things that can happen to a child is to kill or torture an animal and get away with it."
Let's help TOP THIS ABUSE by contributing to Strictly Bird Society to HELP STOP THE ABUSE of our most cherished animals. By contributing whatever you can to help maintain
the Society with Food, Cages, Birds, Training, Financial Contributions. Which goes for education, food, Medical treatment, cages, or whatever the need may be.
PETS MAKE THERAPY FOR THE PATIENTS
They jump onto peoples arms onto the Hospital beds. Yells out Hello, at patients at close range. "Remember when they cooed to you?" asks recreational therapist
Debbie. 95 year old Monica smiles as she remember Sparky a Ringneck Dove who "volunteers" at Pueblo Manor Nursing Home in Pueblo, co. The 95 year old was in the Pueblo Manor
for the last 3 years and met Sparky as she awakened from her sleep. One of the first things she did was pick up Sparky and then was talking to her. Which was the first time
she ever showed any kind of interest toward anything.
The Strictly Bird Society coordinates the Pet Visitation Therapy Programs (Show-N-Tell) at most of the nursing homes and Retirement homes in Colorado.
Strictly Bird Society train's volunteers who want to help the older population of elderly people. The animal visits are vital to recovery for many of the older people,
that feels that no one cares about them anymore.
We start with simple things we know are going to be successful. And because holding a pet is something they're choosing to do, they're more apt to do it." said the Birdman.
Kramer (Birdman of Colorado) brings in JASON a Triton Cockatoo or BABY a Blue & Gold Macaw about two times a month. Kramer says BABY is understandably spoiled about the visits than her
comically stoic stars lets on.
He knows when people are sick or do not want any kind of attention and its O.K. with him. The birds look past the tubes, all of the vices or halos, or blank stares, and accepts
them no matter what. If the animal accepts them Then they can go onto other things.
Therapists can use the birds to help people physcial strength which has been injured and has left them with limited motion. By using our bigger birds which weigh around 20 to 4 lbs.
As weights, or use one of our speaking birds for the Speech Defected patients. The patient tries to coax them to talk.
At Pueblo Manor, the volunteers work with the staff by using the Exotic birds that are trained specifically for use in therapy.
Patients reach for and talk to the birds, and talk about there experiences they had with there pets which they used to have.
Many Pet Therapy programs focus on what the psychological healing affects have on humans. But with our Pet Therapy program it is more goal-oriented for physical as well as Psychological
/ rehabilitation.
The therapy is more oriented in helping them to improve their memory in patients that mught have Alzimers Disease. And it makes them think about what they're doing. People really remember
it and look forward to the birds to come in. It doesn't matter if a bird is large, small, exotic or a common bird. Strictly Bird Society checks all the animals carefully, to make sure their not afraid
of any people that make quick jerky motions.
